Addo Park Area Information |
|
|
The
Greater Addo area is popular with tourists and South Africans alike due
to the number of malaria free game reserves in the area – excellent
alternatives to the Kruger National Park – and because it is home to the
Greater Addo Elephant National Park.
The Greater Addo Elephant National Park, on the N10 just an hour
outside of Port Elizabeth, uniquely offers visitors the
‘Big Seven’ opportunity – rhino, lion, elephant, leopard, buffalo and,
because the park extends to the sea, southern right whales and great
white sharks.
In the heart of the Sundays River Valley and close to towns such
as Addo Village, Colchester, Kirkwood, Nanaga and Paterson, the
Greater Addo Elephant Park is one of South Africa’s successful outcomes
to what could have been an ecological disaster. History in the area is
rife with clashes between local farmers and elephants, to whom crop
damage and night raids were natural reactions to the invasion of their
habitat. The park is now home to over 350 elephant, sustains local flora
and biomes and provides local employment and development opportunities. |
